Local Leaders roundly condemn ‘Brum is a dump” tweeter
Andy Street gave the young Conservative short shrift - “off you pop!”
On the eve of The Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham last week, a furore on twitter say a young Conservative roundly condemned for comments he made online.
Daniel Grainger, who’s twitter bio includes the title of “chairman” of the ‘Young Conservative Network’, tweeted his views on Birmingham:
“Birmingham is a dump”
The tweet swiftly went viral as Brummies leapt to the city’s defence, whilst some attempted to brand the Grainger’s views as representative of the wider Conservative Party.
The Leader of Birmingham Conservatives Council Group Bobby Alden condemned Grainger, calling the comment “disgraceful”.
Metro Mayor Andy Street went further, telling the young visitor, “off you pop then!” and to take anyone with him who shares his views.
Labour politicians in the city were quick to capitalise on the tweet themselves, with Jess Philips MP saying “the Tories doing their best to endear themselves” and Liam Byrne MP tweeting that the tweet “Tells you everything you need to know. About why our great city should never host this bunch again - and why our great country should throw 'em out of office”.
Others were swift to round on Liam Byrne highlighting the inaccuracy of his tweet including co-founder of the Birmingham Young Conservatives:
“As an MP I think you should delete this incorrect tweet and redo it with the correct title for Daniel. He is not the chairman of the young conservatives.”
We spoke to Harvey who told us, “Daniel was absolutely out of line to say what he did not just this time but in the past with his almost yearly comments on Birmingham. By doing so he’s undermined years of trust and work by our great local conservatives and damaged our reputation ahead of this very important conference”
The Young Conservative Network is a group for young conservatives that is not formally affiliated with the Conservative Party itself.
Grainger has since publicly apologised for his tweets.
Counter Cut understands Grainger has now been suspended from the Conservative Party whilst an investigation is carried out into unrelated tweets from 2019.
