Legacy of the commonwealth games
What opportunities present themselves now the games have finished?
The Commonwealth Games was a fantastic event that created a buzz in the city we have never seen in our lifetime. The streets were busy, and the general vibe of Birmingham was just incredible. With the Commonwealth Games ending, how will the long-term legacy of Birmingham be affected?
The games saw Alexander Stadium being extended as well as the building of an amazing Aquatics Centre in Sandwell.
Whilst we all know that the short-term legacy was a huge success it is important to maintain this and use the funding we have received to better Birmingham for the long run. Birmingham is looking at £370 million pounds of extra investment to grow its future economy.
Birmingham is expecting a tourism boom with the Commonwealth games shedding a positive light on the city making many want to visit it. Airbnb have made a £500,000 investment into the city meaning that the private sector are confident of a tourism market increase.
What extra investment means is more jobs, businesses, and better standards of living for any people in the West Midlands. Nigel Huddleston, the government minister responsible for the games said that they ‘hope to create at least 1000 jobs’ as a result of the games.
It is clear that Birmingham is on the up which will benefit Brummies and the West Midlands as a whole.
