Have Birmingham City found their Knight in Shining Armour?

Or is it a case of 'emperor's new clothes' as Bassini looks to sign the deal today?

Birmingham City fans have longed for new owners for longer than they would care to remember. 

Laurence Bassini recently threw his hat into the ring on a national radio station and followed that up a few weeks later, calling the same radio show to tell them the deal was almost done and Bassini was going to win the League with the Blues.

It is no secret that Blues fans have suffered more than most in recent times with new owners and the promises that they inevitably bring. Carson Yeung, the hairdresser from Hong Kong, had claimed he was going to make them a force in Europe and invest £50m in the first transfer window he was in charge of. 

Unfortunately for the Blues faithful they did get into Europe after winning the League Cup in 2011. They would however be playing in Europe as well as playing a busy Championship schedule as they had been relegated that season too. The £50m squad investment was never seen.

Add to that Carson Yeung being arrested for money laundering and the club being sanctioned by the EFL for breaching FFP regulations and you’d be hard pushed to find a fan who wasn’t behind the club being sold. To anyone.

Is Laurence Bassini really the man to bring in the wholesale changes required? Has he got the funds to renovate a dilapidated St. Andrews? Can he pump money into the squad and keep hold of the young talent coming through the academy, without having to sell them at the first offer just to balance the books?

Only time will tell. 

As the deal looks as though it is all wrapped up and will be announced later today many fans across the city will be watching in hope. The dreamers will be certain Bassini will be true to his word and win a league title during his tenure. The realist will assume it will be straight out of the frying pan and into the fire.

With preparation already begun for the new season, it will be interesting to see what immediate changes the new ownership will bring, if any. One thing is for sure, it definitely won’t be boring!
