Birmingham MP Supports Counter Cut Petition to bring Eurovision to West Midlands
The MP for Northfield is calling for the contest to be hosted in Birmingham
Conservative MP for Northfield, Gary Sambrook, has joined calls to bring Eurovision 2023 to the West Midlands. The European Broadcasting Union, who organise the Eurovision song contest, have revealed in a statement today that the United Kingdom will host the contest next year.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the decision was taken that this year‘s runners up, the United Kingdom, should play host to the games on behalf of Ukraine.
A petition calling for the contest to be hosted in the West Midlands has been launched by Counter Cut, a new media platform in the West Midlands.
Gary Sambrook has endorsed Counter Cut‘s campaign saying, “Birmingham would be the perfect host city for Eurovision 2023. With a fantastic track record of delivering events of this kind, the experience of hosting the Commonwealth Games coming up this summer, and a thriving LGBT+ plus scene, no other city is better placed to host the iconic Eurovision contest.”
He added, “the benefits to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region would be enormous: putting us firmly on the map, riding a much-needed boost to our hospitality and leisure sector, and playing a firm role in Europe’s cultural seen.
“I strongly support Counter Cut’s petition, but I’m naturally putting Birmingham first and foremost as the host city”.
The contest which took place last month in host city Turin was last hosted by Birmingham in 1998. The UK has not hosted the contest since.
The European Broadcasting Union have confirmed talks are ongoing with the BBC to make preparations for next year’s event.
