Garden Waste Charge Discount Scrapped
Conservatives on Birmingham City Council have condemned the decision
Labour-led Birmingham City Council have cancelled the early bird discount for those renewing their garden waste collection service early.
Birmingham City Council charges £50 for fortnightly green waste collections throughout the summer months, but have offered a 10% saving to those who renew their subscription early, until now. The Council has scrapped the saving, despite the February budget making room for the discount.
The local Conservatives on the City Council argue that scrapping the discount will disincentivise people from renewing their subscription and make it harder for the Council to plan the waste collection scheme’s delivery.
A spokesperson for the Conservatives told Counter Cut, “it is often forgotten that Birmingham City Council Houses have gardens; many of the Council’s tenants are rightly proud of their gardens. It is utterly wrong that the Council effectively taxes its own tenants to remove their garden waste. This is especially true given that this increase in Labour’s Garden Tax coincides with the period of the highest expected leaf fall for the year.”
The Conservative group would like to see this Garden Tax removed completely and believes the service should be free.
